Indonesia Can Be Global Food Supplier

Source: ANTARA News

Jakarta – Indonesia can become a major food supplier not only for Asia but also for the world if the government implements the right kind of policies, according to a Bogor Institute of Agriculture (IPB) official.

“By implementing positive policies, the government could encourage farmers to increase the production of food ingredients,” said Purwiyatno Hariyadi, the Director of Southeast Asian Food and Agricultural Science and Technology (SEAFAST) Centre, in a written statement to ANTARA on Wednesday.

“The food ingredients market is still growing and Indonesia can become a major supplier because the country has extensive areas of land to produce them,” he added.

Indonesia has been chosen again to host Food Ingredients Asia 2012 (FIA 2012) from October 3-5.

Purwiyatno expressed hope that the opportunity for Indonesia to become a major global supplier of food ingredients should encourage the country’s food technologists, food processing companies, and food producers to learn and make the best use of food processing technology and innovations in the world.

“Therefore they are expected to take advantage of the Food Ingredients Asia 2012 event, which will be held on October 3-5, 2012, in Jakarta to promote Indonesia’s food ingredients to outside parties,” he said.

Purwiyatno added that both domestic and foreign consumers were interested in Indonesian food because of its characteristic taste.

“No wonder it makes Indonesia a magnet for food manufacturers around the world,” he went on.

Meanwhile, ASEAN Business UBM Asia executive director M Gandhi pointed out that the consumption of processed foods in Indonesia had grown by 41 percent in the past five years.

He said food ingredient producers around the world were attracted to Indonesia’s big market potential, adding that FIA 2012 would offer them direct access to the ASEAN market.

Gandhi noted that 500 food manufactures around the world were expected to take part in the event and around 9,000 visitors were likely to attend it.

“The rapid growth of ASEAN market with increasing public consumption offers an opportunity for Indonesia to become a major food ingredient supplier country,” he said.
